Can histamine intolerance cause mood disorders or depression?

Yes!

Histamine intolerance can cause depression, mood disorders, lack of motivation, brain fog, concentration problems, drowsiness, and anxiety. Histamine, as a signaling molecule, is present in the brain.

Table – How to distinguish histamine intolerance from other diseases based on reactions to consumed foods?

Reading through histamine forums, I often see that many chronic or prolonged symptoms described are frequently NOT caused by histamine intolerance! A DETAILED examination is always necessary before arriving at a diagnosis of histamine intolerance by exclusion.

Reactions caused by histamine intolerance appear almost immediately, but definitely within a few hours, except for some symptoms (e.g., inflammatory skin symptoms or acid reflux complaints). Most reactions occur within minutes after eating and resolve within hours!

Histamine intolerance, however, is NOT AN ALLERGY!

Below, I list some foods. When consumed alone, reactions to these foods may help indicate certain diseases:

The specific food (when consumed alone) Reaction in Histamine Intolerance (quantity-dependent)
Reaction in other diseases
Apple Can be consumed in moderation In oral allergy syndrome, raw fruits cause itching sensation in the mouth. In allergy and cross-allergy, skin and other reactions may occur.
Coffee, chocolate In mild histamine intolerance, can be consumed in moderation; in moderate or severe intolerance, may cause headache, diarrhea, palpitations, and coughing in asthmatics Due to caffeine, even healthy individuals may experience reactions such as palpitations or dizziness
Tomato In concentrated form or in sauces, it may cause symptoms. Typically: sometimes it causes symptoms (e.g., heartburn), sometimes not. In oral allergy syndrome, raw foods cause symptoms, but cooked ones are tolerated.
Pickled vegetables Tolerated in small amounts Allergic reaction in case of allergy
Milk Lactose: tolerable.
Milk protein: some products are tolerable, some are not.
Aged cheeses may cause symptoms.
Histamine content in dairy products can vary.
Lactose intolerance causes gastrointestinal symptoms. Milk protein allergy is a common condition (symptoms include runny nose, sneezing, rash)
Nuts Can be consumed in small amounts In allergy, reactions can be potentially life-threatening
Potato, boiled in water Can be consumed in moderation, often without reaction Kartoffelallergie (oder -intoleranz) ist äußerst selten.
Wheat flour (gluten) The symptoms caused depend on the preparation method, type, and AMOUNT consumed: fermentation and yeast can become problematic above certain quantities.
Celiac disease often causes hidden symptoms (anemia, chronic diarrhea, weight loss, etc.)
Vinegar-marinated fish product Often causes symptoms Fish allergy can cause symptoms
Sausages, offal, cured meat products They may cause symptoms depending on the amount consumed, especially if they contain onions, additives, or DAO-blocking substances. Symptoms can suddenly appear when the ingested histamine amount exceeds the individual's tolerance threshold with increased consumption. Allergic reactions to meat are rare; fish and seafood more commonly trigger allergic reactions
